The Wireless Days 2017 will take place at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), Porto, Portugal.

FEUP

The Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), with its origins in the 18th century, is the engineering faculty of the University of Porto, in Porto, Portugal. FEUP is considered a top-level engineering school – one of the best in Europe. The University of Porto (Universidade do Porto), founded in 1911, is a Portuguese public university located in Porto. It is the second largest Portuguese university by number of enrolled students, with about 30 000 students.

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, located about 300 km north from Lisbon. Porto is located along the Douro river estuary adn the Atlantic ocean, and is one of the oldest European centres. Porto historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, and its urban area has a population exceeding 2 million. Porto was elected in 2014 as The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency.

How to get to Porto and FEUP

FEUP is located in Portugal, on the northern edge of the city of Porto, near the Circunvalação ring road (EN12) and next to Hospital de São João.

By metro

The easiest way to get to FEUP is by Metro (Yellow Line), which should take about 10-15 minutes from São Bento or Aliados station to IPO station. This line passes in Trindade station – the main station, where it makes connection to all other lines, including the airport line. When you reach IPO station, you will have a 10 minutes walking time to FEUP. The subway runs from 6 am to 1 am, 7 days a week. A single Z2 trip costs €1.20, or 10+1 trips for €12. We advise you to charge multiple trips at a time to avoid queues on the charging machines.

By bus

There are 4 bus lines in the Faculty’s zone: 204, 300, 301 and 803.

There are other STCP bus lines from Hospital de S.João, as well as regular bus routes to other cities.

In order to choose the best bus routes for your needs, please consult the map and check the timetables. The ticketing system is the same as Metro – a Z2 Andante (blue) rechargeable ticket.

 

By car

The best way to find the Faculty of Engineering is to follow signs to Hospital de São João. The following are the main routes to FEUP by road:

Coming from Ermesinde, Gondomar and Valongo via the Circunvalação ring road (EN12)

You should follow the EN12 until you find Hospital de São João on your left. Go straight on at the traffic lights with Rua Dr. Roberto Frias and keep left. At the next traffic lights, turn left into Rua António Bernardino Almeida (the IPO will be on your right) and go straight on across Rua Dr. Plácido da Costa. Keep left until the next junction, where you should turn left. Go down this road until you reach another junction where you should turn left. Go to the end of the road and at the junction at the end, turn left into Rua Dr. Roberto Frias. Keep right until the junction with Via Estruturante, where you should turn right.

Coming from Maia and Matosinhos via the Circunvalação ring road (EN12)

You should follow the EN12 until you find the IPO on your right. Enter the right lane at the traffic lights in order to turn right into Rua António Bernardino Almeida (skirting round the IPO). Go straight on through the junction with Rua Dr. Plácido da Costa. Keep left until the next junction, where you should turn left. Go down this street until you reach another junction where you should turn left. Go to the end of the road and at the junction at the end, turn left into Rua Dr. Roberto Frias. Keep right until the junction with Via Estruturante, where you should turn right.

Car park

FEUP has three car parks skirting its south perimeter, all of which are accessed from Via Estruturante (which runs at right angles to Rua Dr. Roberto Frias).

Acesso ao Parque 1 e 2 Access to the car park for faculty and (permanent) staff members, as well as visitors;
Acesso ao Parque 3 Access to the student car park;
Acesso ao Parque 4 Access to the car park for non-permanent staff members.

By train

If you are travelling by train to Porto, please be advised that Porto has 2 train stations: Campanhã, the largest and main station, is located at the edge of the city, while São Bento is located right on the city centre, within walking distance to the venue hotels. Connections between Campanhã and São Bento station /city centre can be done by urban trains or through metro lines A, B, C, E or F. For directions from city centre to FEUP please follow the directions in “By Metro” section.

The Sud Expresso international train service connects Porto to the French border and to the French high-speed train – “TGV-Atlantique” which runs between the Spanish border and Paris.

  • If you are arriving from Campanhã station, you should catch the Metro and choose any one of the following lines: A (blue), B (red), C (green) or E (purple). You will have to change at Trindade station to catch Line D (yellow). You should then follow the directions given in the option “By Metro”.
  • If you are arriving from S. Bento station, you should take Metro Line D (yellow) and then follow the directions given in the option “By Metro”.

By plane

Porto is well served with by domestic, international and intercontinental flight connections to Porto Airport – OPO (Francisco Sá Carneiro), 15 km away from the city centre. For intercontinental flights, please also consider Lisbon Airport – LIS (Humberto Delgado). From Lisbon Airport – LIS (Humberto Delgado) to Porto Airport you can take one of the hourly plane connections from TAP, which should take about one hour. You can also take the train from Lisbon Oriente to Porto São Bento or Porto Campanhã. The trip should take between 2.30 – 3:00h. Please see the “By Train” section for more information.
Porto Metro system has a direct connection (purple line – E) between the Airport to the city centre (Trindade Metro Station) that runs every 20-30 minutes. The ticket costs €1.95 (Z4 ticket) plus €0.60 for a rechargeable blue card (Andante), that can be used for the rest of your stay. The trip to/from the Airport to the city centre takes about 30 minutes. You can also take any taxi just outside the arrivals. The ride should cost around €20-25 to city centre or FEUP.
